The Anatomy of Sports

Sports are popular activities enjoyed by individuals from all walks of life. They are common across all cultures, with the United States in particular having a love affair with professional sports. Sports are generally divided into two categories: competitive and non-competitive. Competitions can take place in any form, with the most popular being wrestling. However, competitive sports refer to those which require a level of physical exertion. Many types of racing and some games are also classified as sports.

An athlete in a competitive sport is known as a sports person. For example, footballers, cyclists, drivers, motorcyclists, basketball players, and tennis players are all examples of athletes. Professional sports persons work hard to maintain their body shape, strength, flexibility, endurance, and agility. In order to excel at sports, they train rigorously and often use specialized equipment. Athletes engaged in sports have to be both highly coordinated and highly skilled, as they need to be quick and agile in their movements and reactions.

Many sports suffer from a condition called heat exhaustion or the loss of energy. Heat exhaustion causes the muscles to relax and the cardiovascular system to slow down, eventually resulting in a loss of oxygen. Heat exhaustion is most commonly seen in sprinting or running, but it can also occur in weightlifting, swimming, surfing, cycling, gymnastics, baseball, tennis, bowling, football, and soccer. Though the condition is not harmful in all sports, it can be very annoying and can certainly be debilitating to an athlete during a game or competition. Heat exhaustion may also cause a heat stroke, which can be potentially life threatening.
